Extremadura celebrates its day on 8 September, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the region's patron saint. In 2027 it has 12 public holidays: the 9 shared by all of Spain and 3 of its own, Maundy Thursday (Thursday 25 March), Extremadura Day (Wednesday 8 September) and Replaces 15 August (Assumption) (Monday 11 October). Local holidays for the towns of Badajoz and Cáceres are published in the Official Journal of Extremadura. Badajoz celebrates Saint John in June and often picks a Carnival day; Cáceres, Saint George in April; Mérida, the capital, Saint Eulalia in December. In 2027 15 August falls on a Sunday and Extremadura does not move it to Monday 16 as other regions do: it swaps it for Monday 11 October, which with Tuesday 12 makes a four-day weekend without taking leave.

Extremadura has 388 municipalities in two provinces, Badajoz and Cáceres, and the regional government publishes their local holidays in a DOE resolution, which in 2026 came out on 27 October with the 2027 days. Many southern towns pick a Carnival day, and Badajoz has one of the busiest carnivals in Spain, while others choose their May or August festivities. Mérida, the capital, honours Saint Eulalia in December, right next to the Constitution long weekend.

Common questions

Why is 11 October 2027 a holiday in Extremadura?

Because it replaces 15 August, which falls on a Sunday in 2027. Instead of giving Monday 16 August off, like Andalusia, Aragon or Madrid, the regional government put it on Monday 11 October, next to the National Day on Tuesday 12: four days in a row, Saturday 9 to Tuesday 12.

How many working days does Extremadura have in 2027?

Leaving local holidays aside, 251 days Monday to Friday. April has the most (22) and January the fewest (19). Labour Day and Christmas Day land on a weekend, so Extremadura loses 2 of its 12 holidays. If your town's two local days fall midweek, you work 249 days.

Which Extremadura holidays change from 2026 to 2027?

Off the list: Day after All Saints' Day (2026: Monday 2 November) and Monday after Constitution Day (2026: Monday 7 December); new: Replaces 15 August (Assumption) (Monday 11 October). Kept: Maundy Thursday and Extremadura Day. Source: the 2027 and 2026 BOE resolutions.
