Catalonia celebrates the Diada on 11 September, recalling the fall of Barcelona in 1714, and is one of the few regions where Maundy Thursday is not a holiday. In 2027 it has 12 public holidays: the 9 shared by all of Spain and 3 of its own, Easter Monday (Monday 29 March), St John's Day (Thursday 24 June) and National Day of Catalonia (Saturday 11 September). Instead of Maundy Thursday, Catalonia gives Easter Monday, Saint John's Day on 24 June and, when it is not a Sunday, Saint Stephen's Day on 26 December. Its towns' local holidays are published in the Official Journal of the Generalitat in a single order. Barcelona celebrates La Mercè in September and usually adds Whit Monday; Girona, Sant Narcís in October; Lleida, Sant Anastasi in May; Tarragona, Santa Tecla in September. The Val d'Aran swaps one holiday for the Aran Festival on 17 June.

Catalonia has 947 municipalities, and the Generalitat publishes all their local holidays in a DOGC order with an annex sorted by district. Many councils around Barcelona pick Whit Monday, seven weeks after Easter Monday, plus their summer or autumn main festival. When a town does not propose its days in time, the order says so and the list waits for a later amendment, as happened to Cerdanyola del Vallès in 2026.

Common questions

Is 11 September 2027 a holiday in Catalonia?

Yes, the Diada is a regional holiday in 2027, but it falls on a Saturday, so people working Monday to Friday gain no day off. Catalonia has not moved it: Royal Decree 2001/1983 only requires national holidays falling on a Sunday to move to Monday, and the Diada is a regional one.

How many working days does Catalonia have in 2027?

252, Monday to Friday and before local holidays. April has the most (22) and January the fewest (19). Of its 12 holidays, 3 fall on a weekend (Labour Day, National Day of Catalonia and Christmas Day) and are not made up. With two weekday local holidays, 250 remain.

Which Catalonia holidays change from 2026 to 2027?

Off the list: St John's Day (2026: Wednesday 24 June) and St Stephen's Day (2026: Saturday 26 December); new: St John's Day (Thursday 24 June). Kept: Easter Monday and National Day of Catalonia. The holidays shared by all of Spain also move to another weekday: in 2027 1 May and 25 December fall on a Saturday and 15 August on a Sunday.
