The Canary Islands celebrate their day on 30 May, the anniversary of the first sitting of the Canary Parliament in 1983, and each island adds a holiday of its own. In 2027 it has 11 public holidays, plus one per island: the 9 shared by all of Spain and 2 of its own, Maundy Thursday (Thursday 25 March) and Monday after Assumption Day (Monday 16 August). The Canaries are the only region with three layers: 11 shared holidays, one per island set by Canary government decree, and each town's two local days, published in the Official Gazette of the Canaries. Tenerife's island holiday is Candlemas, 2 February; Gran Canaria's, Our Lady of the Pine, 8 September; Lanzarote's, Our Lady of the Volcanoes, 15 September. The islands run an hour behind the mainland, including at the clock change. In 2027 30 May falls on a Sunday and does not appear on the list.

Carnival Tuesday is a local holiday in many Canary towns, especially Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and its date changes every year with Easter. On La Palma the island holiday is Our Lady of the Snows, and on Fuerteventura Our Lady of the Rock. To know your days off you have to add up three lists, the region's, your island's and your town's, and the tool on this page does that by itself when you pick the town.

Common questions

Why is Canary Islands Day not a day off in 2027?

Because 30 May 2027 is a Sunday and the Canary government has not moved it to Monday; its 2027 list includes Monday 16 August instead, for the 15th falling on a Sunday. It is still celebrated, but no working day is freed. In 2026 it fell on a Saturday, with the same effect for people working Monday to Friday.

How many working days does Canary Islands have in 2027?

Canary Islands counts 252 working days in 2027 before each town's two local holidays, which usually bring it to 250. April has the most (22) and January the fewest (19). The 2 holidays falling on a Saturday or Sunday (Labour Day and Christmas Day) give no day off.

Which Canary Islands holidays change from 2026 to 2027?

Off the list: Canary Islands Day (2026: Saturday 30 May) and Day after All Saints' Day (2026: Monday 2 November); new: Monday after Assumption Day (Monday 16 August). Kept: Maundy Thursday. The holidays shared by all of Spain also move to another weekday: in 2027 1 May and 25 December fall on a Saturday and 15 August on a Sunday.
